ZigBee Networking Solution for Automating Parking Structure System


In an effort to maximize the investment in what is typically expensive real estate, parking structure owners focus on fitting as many vehicles as possible into a confined space. Accommodating hundreds or thousands of vehicles in a multi-level concrete parking garage requires special safety and efficiency measures.

All available parking spots must be clearly marked so that drivers can find available spaces and parking garage attendants have a real-time view of when the structure is full. Special sensors embedded in the ground monitor vehicle traffic inside the parking structure, and by means of a wireless XBee connection, these sensors can then relay vehicle movement to a ConnectPort® X gateway. Connected back via device cloud, the parking garage can be automatically monitored for available parking spaces.

Another concern is that with so many running vehicles filling a confined area, the level of toxic fumes can reach dangerous levels. Sensors that detect carbon monoxide and other dangerous gasses are also wireless enabled via XBee adapters. When the gas levels reach a certain parameters the programmable ConnectPort X gateway and Toxic Gas System Controller can automatically start the ventilation system that will vent any noxious fumes. This process provides safety for the clients and reduces energy cost by only utilizing the variable air volume system when necessary.

Running new cabling in existing all-concrete structures is difficult and expensive. Additional systems such as lighting controls can also be controlled wireless via XBee and then connected back to the same ConnectPort X gateway for remote monitoring and control via deice cloud. Because of the robust mesh networking capabilities of the ZigBee network, redundant communications can be established throughout a multi-story parking structure.
